Over the past two decades, the United States has been importing more and more avocados each year, underlining a growing obsession with the nutrient-dense fruit. Simultaneously, the U.S. and the rest of the world have been dealing with a growing environmental crisis spurred on by an overreliance on plastic. Could avocados — specifically avocado peels — provide a potential solution?

Leadership at USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) have responded to a request from National Bison Association to find a new path for relief for bison producers affected by Mycoplasma infection and mortality. In previous years, the FSA considered Mycoplasma to be a secondary infection in bison, which prevented producers from qualifying for reimbursement for death losses under the agency’s Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP).

Rosemary and dairy cows could be a winning combination. A natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory compound found in rosemary plants can improve milk production and possibly help dairy cows weather the stressful post-calving period.

Anand honored for teaching excellence. Anand received the North Central Region for 2021 Excellence in College and University Teaching Awards for Food and Agricultural Sciences by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Dr. Lynn Sargeant has been working on updating the art in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences office. Located on her back wall are two new pieces of art, creating an eye-catching backdrop to the many Zoom meetings she holds and an opportunity to highlight the work of students in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. These pieces of art were created by Alison Simon, a fifth-year senior in the School of Design, the School of Communication and Journalism and the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

Nicholas Uilk, an instructor in South Dakota State University’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, has been named a recipient of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities national teaching awards in recognizing excellence in agricultural sciences teaching and student engagement.

Professor Padu Krishnan of South Dakota State University’s Department of Dairy and Food Science received the 2020 Edith A. Christensen Award for Outstanding Contributions in Analytical Methodology from the Cereals & Grains Association. He is the first South Dakota State University faculty member to get the award, which recognizes the central role analytical methods play in cereal and grain research.
