1995: 50 Works for 50 Years

Nathanial "Nat" Cole

"Dakota Siding"

Nathanial S. “Nat†Cole (1919 – 1989) was associate professor of art at South Dakota State University from 1962 – 1970. A native of Cardin, Oklahoma, Cole completed his M.F.A. in 1952 at the Kansas City Art Institute.

After leaving South Dakota, he served 19 years as associate professor of Art at Missouri Southern State College, Joplin. A colleague remembered, “Nat spent his life trying to give his students as much as he knew. He was kind, quiet, and never had a bad word for anybody. He was always available to his students and was a very patient, caring and understanding man.â€

"Dakota Siding" was donated to the museum in 1995 by Cole’s widow, Ruth, and is one of three works by the artist in the permanent collection.
