“Sharing the Care” explores the meticulous work of art conservators, who examine, document, treat and prevent deterioration. The exhibit opened Feb. 22 and is on display through June 15.
Accompanying many of the objects on display are written descriptions and photographs highlighting their condition before treatment, offering insight into the challenges of preservation. Through a selection of objects awaiting conservation, visitors may also gain practical knowledge on caring for their own artworks and understanding the impact of preservation efforts at every level.
These vital efforts are made possible by generous donors, including many individuals and organizations whose financial support has sustained the museum's conservation initiatives. Their stories are also explored and celebrated throughout the exhibit.
Since its founding in 1970, the South Dakota Art Museum has been committed to safeguarding its collections through rigorous conservation efforts. With expertise from the Midwest Art Conservation Center in Minneapolis, numerous artworks have undergone transformative treatments, preserving their integrity while honoring the artist’s original intent.
In her talk, Jeffcoat will discuss the meaning and importance of conservation by answering the question “What is art conservation?” as well as take visitors through the journey of what conserving a work of art looks like from a painting conservators’ viewpoint.
The lecture will provide an overview of the methods and materials used in the preservation of paintings, including agents of deterioration, common forms of damage and condition issues, and how to reduce or slow down the risk of deterioration. She will give examples from recent treatments at the Midwest Art Conservation Center, including paintings from the South Dakota Art Museum.
Jeffcoat has extensive experience in the care and preservation of paintings and painted surfaces, including canvas paintings, panel paintings and painted sculpture, as well as preventive conservation. Prior to joining the Midwest Art Conservation Center in 2014, she worked at West Lake Conservators in Skaneateles, New York; the Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Arts in Denver, Colorado; and the Denver Art Museum.
She holds a Master of Art Conservation with a specialty in paintings and painted surfaces from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario; a postbaccalaureate certificate in art conservation from Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy, and Bachelor of Fine Arts with a specialization in art history from Louisiana State University.
Admission to the museum is free for all.
