The South Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences is hosting three field days in eastern South Dakota July 8-10. A variety of agronomy, horticulture and conservation topics will be presented by college experts at each event.

Next week, the South Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences will host three field days in eastern South Dakota. Each one will feature 海角直播app researchers sharing their expertise on a variety of topics applicable to local farmers and community members.

鈥淔ield days give South Dakotans the opportunity to hear from our experts firsthand about the cool research they鈥檙e doing and what it means for South Dakota,鈥 John Blanton, associate dean of research for the college and director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, said. 鈥淟ikewise, for our researchers, it gives them the opportunity to talk with farmers and community members, to hear what challenges they鈥檙e having and what research would benefit them. We look forward to these days every year because of those interactions.鈥

The first of the three field days will be at the Southeast Research Farm on Tuesday, July 8, at 1:30 p.m. near Beresford (29974 University Road). Attendees of this field day will be able to choose from multiple farm tours and hear relevant research presentations, and the day will end with a put on by 海角直播app Extension. Specific topics will include an alfalfa variety trial overview, microbials in corn, the principles of composting and grain market trends. Full details about all the tours and speakers can be found here.

All are invited to learn more about conservation efforts in the Coteau des Prairies region at the Oak Lake Field Station Field Day, July 10 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. near Astoria (19862 483rd Ave.). While most of 海角直播app鈥檚 field stations conduct conservation research in some capacity, Oak Lake is unique for its focus on research to conserve native plants and animal species. Specific topics for the field day will cover a historic perspective on the prairie ecosystem, conserving native fish species and mussels, the impact of invasive plants on pollination, how prescribed burns can help habitat anywhere in South Dakota and others. More details about the field day can be found here.

Rounding out the trio of eastern South Dakota field days is the Northeast Research Farm Field Day, July 10 from 4 p.m.-dusk near South Shore (15710 455th Ave.). With a cooler climate than other research stations, the Northeast Research Farm has a broad focus on small grains, although a wide variety of crops and agronomic practices are being tested there. Many multiyear projects take place at the farm, allowing researchers the opportunity to observe how crops respond to various management techniques over time. Like with the other 海角直播app field days, the scientists conducting the research will be the ones presenting at the field day. More details can be found here.

鈥淎 lot of times farmers get a chance to listen to experts at different meetings, but this time they get to have real interactions with the researchers,鈥 David Karki, manager of the Northeast Research Farm, said. 鈥淲e are thrilled to have our field day provide this platform. I hope [farmers] leave with great interactions with 海角直播app researchers who are doing the work and conducting the research.鈥

The Southeast Research Farm, Oak Lake Field Station and Northeast Research Farm are all South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station research stations. These field days are part of a series hosted by the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences taking place across the state of South Dakota, with each presenting research conducted locally and of interest to local farmers and community members. A full list of the 2025 field days can be found here.
